  • Stress and Anxiety

College students often go through stress and anxiety that affect their academic performance. Stress is different for every student. There are many ways to cope up with stress. Some are simple and involve minor adjustments in one’s lifestyle. Other strategies require practice and effort. Feelings of overbearing anxiety and helplessness are manageable, but when they get paralyzing, there is a need for intervention and strategic problem-solving.

    Depression and Grief

Grief results in a wave of overwhelming emotions and coping up can be a slow and painful process. People process grief in different ways. Some cry and talk, others hold it in. Grief must be worked through to get to a place of healthy acceptance, remembrance, and progress with one's life. It is natural to self-isolate oneself but when these tendencies become harmful- one must seek professionally-guided mechanisms for healthy coping.

    Relationship Problems

Irrespective of how ideal a relationship is, be it with family, friends, or any other person, it requires effort. Some relationships, however, are more difficult and require proportionately more work. We have to learn how to accommodate and adapt to their idiosyncrasies, their faults, their moods just as they must learn how to do the same with us. However, if a relationship gets too toxic- it is imperative to seek external help.

    Eating Disorder
    and Body Image Issues

Body image is how we perceive ourselves when we look in the mirror. It can impact what we feel about ourselves and how others perceive us in relationships. It is natural to find flaws in ourselves, but people with a negative body image may take these negative feelings further, resulting in self-hatred and obsessing over an “ideal body”. The key to developing a positive body image is to recognize and respect our natural shape, learn to overpower pessimistic thoughts, and accept ourselves the way we are with positivity and affirmation. Seeking help from a clinical professional can go a long way in treating eating disorders and body-image issues.

    Personality and
    Identity Concerns

It is natural to occasionally feel low, disappointed, or upset. Such emotions can be triggered by events, perceptions, and expectations. But when such feelings turn into perpetual self-doubt and criticism, one gets lost in trying to define themselves in a confident and distinct manner. Going through such confusing and paralyzing emotions can turn to inflict harm on oneself or others, and to prevent such extremities one must seek professional counselling and guidance.

    Substance Abuse

Students may resolve to make alcohol or drugs, a source to deal with stress, anxiety, or depression. Alcohol and other substances may initially serve as a relaxation but eventually lead to many fatal problems. It might interfere with one's academic performance, cause relationship loss/changes, accidents as well as assaults. To prevent such misguided means of coping up, and to deal with it, if one is already going through such a scenario, external mediation is necessary and highly recommended.

    Academic Concerns

It is quite common for students to experience academic difficulties at some point during their college career. While it is necessary to carry a healthy co-scholastic performance, it is very important to maintain decent scholastic performance. This may pose as an overbearing concern for some, that is, finding a way to balance everything along with an acceptable scorecard can be a tough job. When such panic arises, it serves as a precursor to the degradation of mental wellness and stability. It is then advised to seek outside help and fix strategies to achieve the desired balance.

    Family Problems
    and Parental Conflict

Students may go through difficulties not in the outside world, but rather in their homes. Parental conflict and family problems may be so immobilizing that a student becomes unable to function properly due to the stress he experiences. While coping with such stress is feasible, it is often not easy to deal with it alone. Such an issue is eased greatly by the intervention of a clinical professional. Understanding what causes this stress and finding ways to mitigate it becomes easier when there is another unbiased third-party listening to you.

    Suicidal Concerns

Suicide is the second most leading cause of death among college students, killing more young people between the ages of 18-24 than all the physical illnesses combined. Suicide is associated with feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, and a need for escape. People who are suicidal are often quite ambivalent about ending their lives, and hence are willing to get counselling when a caring person facilitates the process for them. Understanding such concerns, and taking steps to revert to a functioning state-of-mind, is a time-sensitive operation. It is therefore essential to take professional measures to help the students.
